It all began with a phrase thrown out almost by chance, on a platform at Milan Centrale, on a hot July day. Stéphanie, waiting for a train, had said to Enrica as she waved goodbye:
“You know, whenever you want, you can come to Paris.”
On September 20, 2018, Enrica climbed the five flights of stairs that creaked with every step to reach her twenty-seven square meters in the Marais.
A month later, Thomas made a surprise entrance into her office. It had only taken a meeting in a café with Stéphanie, following a spontaneous application sent at one in the morning. He was looking for a job for a few months, before leaving on a year-long walking journey across France.
But long nights at the office, late-night trips on the metro, and a few verres shared on a terrasse in the cold of that January changed everything. Thomas never left, and Enrica found herself sharing those twenty-seven square meters… and it was only the beginning.
